Joan received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Saskatchewan in 1996. She has worked for the Saskatchewan Health Authority in Rural Therapies, based in Rosthern, for over 22 years where she enjoyed working with diverse patient populations. She has taken post-graduate training in Extremity and Vertebral Manual Therapy, Myofascial Release, Taping Techniques, and numerous courses addressing specific joint assessment and treatment. In 2007, Joan completed extensive training in Linda-Joy Lee’s Integrated Systems Model which addresses the complex, interconnected relationship between the various structures in the body.

In 2016, Joan started training to become a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) and completed her Advanced Level Training in Sydney, Australia in March 2019 under the instruction of Kathy Kain. She also completed two modules of Kathy Kain’s Touch Skills for Therapists that address Shock Trauma, Developmental Trauma and working with the vital organs of the body.

What is Somatic Experiencing?

  • Somatic Experiencing™ is a body-based approach to treating the effects of trauma. Specifically, the symptoms that arise when trauma is held in the body. The trauma could result from an injury, surgery, car accident, abuse or neglect, birth difficulties, exposure to violence or anything that creates a sense of shock or feeling of overwhelm. The symptoms of trauma can be very difficult to diagnose and treat because they often seem unrelated to any particular event and may have developed over time from a very young age.

  • Symptoms of trauma include chronic or severe pain that does not respond well to medication, headaches, digestive issues, fear, difficulty sleeping, anxiety and depression. Somatic Experiencing™ works with the nervous system and the body’s innate ability to heal and recover from the symptoms of physiological stress. Treatment is gentle, supportive and enhances the effectiveness of the traditional exercise-based physiotherapy.

Joan is passionate about working with individuals to restore resilience and ease to their body. She is excited to work alongside the healthcare professionals at Saskatoon Naturopathic Medicine to help you reach your health and fitness goals.
