It can be all too easy to overindulge during the holidays, and for many - alcohol is no exception. Consumption may increase with extra celebrations, events, and gatherings, or as a coping mechanism to deal with the added stress the season can bring. While it can be fun in the moment or can help you relax, it is not uncommon for holiday cheer to turn into "hangxiety" or the "booze blues" once the party is over.

Alcohol can contribute to these mood changes in a variety of ways:

- Changes in brain chemistry affecting mood (to differing degrees depending on alcohol usage)
- Depletion of nutrients, such as B vitamins which are crucial for a balanced mood
- Impaired deep sleep which may lead to fatigue the following day or days
- Physical effects of drinking alcohol - dehydration, inflammation, headaches, or altered digestive function
- Impulsivity or regretful decision-making while under the influence

If you are planning to indulge this season, consider the following strategies to keep your holidays healthy and cheerful:

- Hydrate - stay on top of your water intake, consider electrolytes.
- Replete your B Vitamins.
- Allow yourself sufficient time to catch up on rest.
- Eat prior to drinking alcohol.
- Set and stick to your drink limits.
- Find alternative outlets for stress - exercise, mindfulness, connecting with loved ones, etc.
- Plan a safe ride home.

If you struggle with mental health or self-medicating with alcohol or other substances, reach out to your healthcare team for help 💙 There are many options, conventional and naturopathic, that can help you to achieve mental wellness in a more sustainable way.
