What Naturopathic Medicine Really Is...and Isn't

When you hear the term naturopathic medicine, what comes to mind? For many, it’s a mix of curiosity, confusion, and unfortunately, some outdated stereotypes. As Saskatoon Naturopathic Medicine, we believe it’s time to rewrite that narrative – with facts, clarity, and a genuine passion for empowering people to reclaim their health.
This Naturopathic Medicine Week, we’re shedding light on what licensed naturopathic doctors really do, how we collaborate with conventional healthcare providers, and why naturopathic medicine is one of the most powerful, evidence-informed paths to lifelong wellness.
What Is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care that combines modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. It focuses on treating the root cause of illness, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal, and promoting long-term wellness – not just symptom relief.
Licensed naturopathic doctors (NDs) are highly trained professionals. In Canada, they complete a four-year post-graduate degree from an accredited institution which includes 3,000 hours of classroom training and 1,200 hours of clinical rotations, they write and pass a standardized North American licensing exam, and they participate in regular continuing education.
The naturopathic medicine toolkit includes:
- A comprehensive in-depth history and brief physical exam
- Lab testing & diagnosis
- Clinical nutrition
- Botanical medicine
- Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine
- Lifestyle counselling
- Physical medicine
- Targeted supplementation
What Naturopathic Medicine Isn’t
Let’s bust a few myths:
- “Naturopathic doctors aren’t real doctors.”
They are regulated health professionals with in-depth naturopathic medical training. They are not a replacement for your MD – they work alongside them to provide whole-person care.
- “Natural means unscientific.”
Many of our tools are backed by clinical research. This is an exciting time as reputable journals are publishing papers every day on natural approaches to health and healing. Naturopathic medicine has become more mainstream and is no longer considered to be “fringe medicine”.
- “You have to choose between naturopathic and conventional medicine.”
Not at all. In fact, some of the most transformative outcomes happen when both work together. We are proud to collaborate with your healthcare team.
Why More People Are Turning to Naturopathic Care
We hear it (and see it) all the time. People are juggling careers, families, body changes, stress, and societal expectations – all while trying to stay healthy. Too often they have felt dismissed or told “everything looks normal” when it clearly doesn’t feel that way.
At our clinic, we take the time to listen. Our visits take longer, our approach is personalized, and our care is rooted in getting to the bottom of your symptoms – not masking them.
The Philosophy That Sets Us Apart
Naturopathic medicine Is guided by six principles. Here’s what they mean in your life:
- First, Do No Harm – Choose the least invasive treatments necessary.
- The Healing Power of Nature – Trust and support your body’s wisdom.
- Identify and Treat the Cause – Dig deeper than symptoms.
- Doctor as Teacher – Help you understand your body and take charge of your health.
- Treat the Whole Person – Look at all the body’s systems together to see the whole picture.
- Prevention – True wellness starts before illness appears.
