At Saskatoon Naturopathic Medicine, our naturopathic approach to treating depression is multi-pronged. We treat depression and can improve your mood using dietary changes, herbs, and other natural supplements.

Rule-out Nutrient Deficiencies – Various nutrients are required to make the chemicals in our brain that balance mood. These brain chemicals are called neurotransmitters. Research shows that people low in certain nutrients are more likely to suffer from depression and low mood. At Saskatoon Naturopathic Medicine we will work with you to select certain supplements that are tailored to your needs in order to address these deficiencies. We use lab tests along with a clinical history and physical assessment to get an in-depth view of your nutrient status.

Increase serotonin – Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that that has the most significant influence on mood. It’s considered the brain chemical that helps us experience happiness. Many prescription drugs for depression help to increase serotonin levels by preventing the breakdown of serotonin in the brains. The doctors at Saskatoon Naturopathic Medicine work with patients to ensure they have the proper “raw materials” that the body needs to make serotonin naturally. Supplementing with serotonin precursors and co-factors required to synthesize serotonin can improve mood while eliminating the serious side-effects associated with antidepressant drugs. Specific herbs can also support serotonin levels and mood. Research demonstrates that some herbs are as effective as antidepressant drugs.

Improve GUT health – There continues to be more and more research coming out on the interconnection between gut health and our mood. For example, Irritable Bowel Disorder (IBS) and an imbalance of bacteria in the gut is associated with depression. At Saskatoon Naturopathic Medicine we can test for food sensitivities and assess your gut health and by removing food sensitivities and supporting your gut health we can work towards mood improvement. Having a healthy gut microbiome may contribute to a positive mood.

Rule-out infection – Chronic infections affect the immune system and can cause fatigue, anxiety, and depression. This may not be the case for everyone with depression, but this should be explored as a possible contributing factor.

Address Hormonal Imbalances - Sex, thyroid and adrenal hormones can all contribute to mood and motivation. Hormonal imbalances can be explored as a contributing factor.

Diet & Lifestyle – Diet plays an important role in regulating moods. Improving nutrient intake, balancing blood sugar, eliminating food sensitivities, exercising, participating in a favourite activity and reducing inflammation can help with depression and aid in balancing your mood. At Saskatoon Naturopathic Medicine we can also work with you to balance your lifestyle for optimal health.

Counselling – Changing the way you think in a positive way is an important part of treating depression since some simple techniques can be helpful to change the way you think. At our clinic, we have counsellors that can be apart of your healthcare team.
